Tell me why it’s been 18 months but
my heart still collapses into sinkholes
when your ex’s name tiptoes out of your mouth.
And I know it’s just a whisper, but why does it
still sound more like tornado sirens?
Yesterday, we were sharing an ice cream sandwich,
when you looked at me & I’m reminded that sometimes
living people can haunt us more than ghosts can.
See, the worst thing is that she’s not even here
but she can still suck all the oxygen out of a room.
I used to think it’d be easy —
that you’d fall out of love with her
the way coins slip out of shallow pockets
but when you kiss me hard, I can
still hear your left pockets jingling.
